Visualizing Complex Organizational Pay Structures

In 2019, Dow implemented company-wide organizational changes to establish a more unified structure and pay scale. I collaborated with Dow to develop a solution for effectively communicating a large amount of data cohesively. We addressed this challenge by creating a grid system, with job families on the y-axis and grades on the x-axis. Dow’s fifteen departments varied significantly, with some having as few as six grades and one job family, while others had up to thirteen grades and eleven job families. This variation required multiple grid layouts. We created 12x20, 14x20, 16x20, and 18x20 grids in a tabloid-size InDesign document, placing jobs accordingly and color-coding them into two groups: individual contributor and people leader.
